So what is the main difference between the Canon “straight” 5Ds vs. the 5Ds r? It all esentially boils down to the low-pass filter in front of the sensor (chip). Without geeking out over the technology that goes into the process, the low pass filter was introduced years ago on DSLR technology for the main reason of reducing the moire’ pattern on fabrics, patterns, etc. As photo sites on the sensor, improperly called pixels, were reduced in size they became small enough that the lenses did not pick up the patterns on such a small scale and were somewhat…softer. This softness helped break up the pattern and hence moire’ issues were reduced. It should be noted that placing micro filters also helped this fact as well.
Be it known that NO single shot digital camera can claim 100% moire’ free capture, it seems that the Canon EOS 5DSR with its 50.6MP sensor has a natural moire’ cause based on photo sites alone. With the absence of the low-pass filter images appear to be sharper due to the lack of another piece of glass that filters the image.
